FROM THE POST COMMANDER
Greg Rogers
This past November we lost a longtime friend and valuable member of VFW Post 9650, Don Wehunt. Don was not only a friend and colleague but also the past Post Commander, for many years, and District 20 Commander. I was happy to call Don my friend and mentor. May you have "Fair Winds and Following Seas” Don, we’ll all miss you.
Post Membership and Auxiliary Meetings are very important to attend. By not attending you have no reason to complain about how the post is being operated, your voice and advice are welcome! By attending Post Meetings, you can make a difference so I hope you as a post member consider attending our meetings held on the second Monday of each month at 6:00 pm.
It’s finally happening –HVAC Systems are being installed in the Post Hall and will be completed by the end of December, weather permitting, the old Swamp Coolers are being removed. This will make it a little more bearable during our Hot Summer Days.
The county is adding to their 2025 budget a NEW SOLAR SYSTEM proposal for the Post. Keep an eye open for further information.
Here's to a very HAPPY AND SAFE NEW YEAR!

AUXILIARY NEWS
Happy New Year! I hope all of you had a wonderful Christmas.
Please keep Auxiliary sister Julie Santos in your thoughts as she has been "under the weather” since shortly before Christmas.
With the exception of helping the Post with its monthly breakfasts, dinners, and weekly Bingo on Sunday evenings, the Auxiliary has been "quiet”. Thanks to all of you that volunteer for these events.
It was sad not to have a Post Holiday Dinner in December; but I do understand. This year, there were only three Saturdays before Christmas, and maybe many members’ calendars were filled. Next year there will be four Saturdays, no much better, so maybe the Post could schedule the Holiday dinner for the first Saturday, December 6th.
Although we have 180+ Auxiliary members, attendance at our monthly meetings generally runs between 10 to 12. We would like to see more members attend. An agenda is provided and President Ralph Fredregill conducts a good meeting, with adjournment around 7 pm. We are "dark” in January, but would like to see some of you at our next meeting on February 10th.
And, don’t forget to try to attend monthly breakfasts and/or dinners. You get a great meal for a suggested donation of $10. More information is included within this newsletter.
JOIN THE VETERANS OF FOREIGN WARS
As yesterday's defenders of freedom, we want to welcome today's military service members into our ranks to become part of our elite group. Our common bond is the battlefield, whether it is service in the Persian Gulf, Korea, Kosovo, the Global War on Terrorism or peace-keeping expeditionary campaigns. Your courage and sacrifice have made a difference in preserving and defending world peace.
If you have received a campaign medal for overseas service; have served 30 consecutive or 60 non-consecutive days in Korea; or have ever received hostile fire or imminent danger pay, then you're eligible to join our ranks.
To become one of the ‘elites’ contact the post, call us (530) 365-9650, or email us at vfwpost9650@aol.com
THOUGHT FOR THE DAY
"The militia is the natural defense of a free country against … domestic usurpation of power by rulers.”
Joseph Story (Supreme Court Justice 1833)
CHAPLIN’S MESSAGE
Jesus, you said, ‘There is no greater love than to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.’ Today we pray for those men and women who have, in their military service, sacrificed their time, strength, ambition, health and even their lives on this earth to benefit ‘friends,’ known and unknown.
Many of our warriors carry scars in their hearts as well as on their bodies. Dark memories haunt their dreams at night. Fears cloud their waking hours. Jesus, you came to give us abundant life by providing a way for us to release our pain to you. On the cross you bore our sorrows and brokenness and when we trust you, we can exchange our wounds for your joy in a future unhindered by fate. Bring this gift now to the veterans of our nation who bear tangible and intangible wounds. Heal them, Jesus.
Bless the families of soldiers who bear these pains vicariously. Give them patience and wisdom and strength to endure, and more than endure to hope in faith for a blessed life. God, not everything that happens in life is good. But you promise to work all things together for good to those who love you and align their lives with your purpose. Create good in the families of veterans who have experienced pain and loss. Do this miracle, we pray.
We honor our veterans in your name. We thank you – as we thank them – for their sacrifice. We ask you to return to them the favor of your blessing, a gift we on our own could never offer. We ask that you would give our veterans a peace beyond the peace they fought to secure, a peace in their own hearts, wrapped in the joy of a life touched by your strong hand.
In Jesus we pray, Amen.
